Walking the Tyburn

by jamie_gregory @ 11. Mar 2007 - 17:44:21

London has seven rivers flowing from the north side of the Thames Valley into the River Thames. Each river corresponds to one of the seven planets of classical astrology. This is my photo-documentary of the descent of the Tyburn, a culverted river, which starts in Hampstead, flows through Swiss Cottage. It sinews under the West End of London and Buckingham Palace and onward until its outflow near Vauxhall Bridge.

The Tyburn no longer surfaces at any point along its winding descent; the city grew over it hiding it beneath roads and pavements. However it shaped the land before the arrival of man and can still be recognised, by a careful eye, guiding the pathways and half-hidden lanes of this city.

Tho’ we cover Nature with a veneer we are forever subject to her influence whether we acknowledge it or not.
